In War and in Peace, in Love and in Hate, in Sickness and in Health, the Dreams of Life will intoxicate us, and we will Dance with Passion.

greek wisdom

Do you want to know more about us? Alrighty then, read on!

My name is Kenny. I am Mi'kmaq from Eskasoni First Nations and Maria (aka ria) is Greek from California.

In May of 1994, we met at the REDROAD HONORING SOBRIETY POW WOW in California.  We started hanging out together at a few more pow wows and were married in a traditional ceremony at Pinnacles National Monument, California in March 1995.

We both walk and sometimes dance the REDROAD... a way of life that is alcohol, drug and violence free. Some folks would say we are traditional or tribalists because we live in a way that respects, honors and celebrates ourselves, others and all creation. We say we are just 2 people blessed with all life has to offer us and we want to share our gratitude and joy with others.

We have a son, daughter, and 4 grandchildren ages 2-13 years, and another one on the way.

We also share our home with our very special XenaLuna the warrior kitty aka as pow wow kitty!  She loves pow wows!!!

We enjoy living healthy. Maria loves to garden and has a special medicine garden. She is also a Reiki practitioner and makes her own herbal remedies as well as water therapy products which she sells and shares with family and friends.

We find great joy with our grandchildren, friends, family and of course XenaLuna! We also enjoy the outdoors, camping, music, arts and crafts and Powwows,Mawiomis, Big Times and all other kinds of ceremonial/social gatherings.

We show our drums and paintings at galleries, expos and tradeshows. We go all over the Atlantic Provinces and US. That is where you will see us during Powwow season. We try to bring our passion for life to you through our business and this web site.

ABOUT OUR DRUMS

We make drums because we believe every man, woman and child should have a drum. Wouldn't it be great if Every family had a drum? It is most likely one of the first instruments human beings made to sing, dance and celebrate life's cycles and events.

We believe there is great healing in a drum's voice and in the voice of one singing with the drum. We all carry that ability. Drums have been a part of every society across the globe, so we do not feel having a drum is exclusive to any particular person or group.

We sell beautiful handcrafted drums but we are not selling religion or spirituality. That is a very private issue that cannot be sold or bought. We may share what we have learned on our life's journey...but we are not promoting the sale of Native Spirituality. How one uses a drum is a very personal matter. Our greatest desire is that the drum you may choose to purchase from us will be respected and used in a good way with a good heart.

Hand a very young child a drum and see what happens. Teach that child to respect the drum and care for it as a family member and that child will also learn to respect and care for self, family, community the world. Why"? because the drum has and always will carry the heartbeat of humanity.

It is never to late to pick up a drum and follow a good redroad to the beat of your own drum!

Marikens Trading Post

 REDROAD DRUMS and our history.
While living in California,  Kenny earned a degree in mechanical drafting, and worked in a leather mill while developing his skills in drum making and leatherwork.

Maria, a self taught artist,  was a preschool director/teacher and also taught various programs in cultural education, theater and art.

We were both acitve in community volunteer programs, pow wow committees and social justice issues especially those regarding aboriginal rights.

We had both wanted to have our own business and to devote more time to our artistry, crafting and creative projects as well as offering products that would honor aboriginal traditions and heritage as well as educate others about and promote aboriginal culture. We had both agreed that once our daughter was off to college, we would return to Canada, however In 2000, a family crisis brought us back a little sooner than our original plans.

While living in Canada, we began to make and sell many handcrafted items along with Kenny's drums and Maria's original artwork which we sold at the Local Farmers Market, pow wows and craft shows throughout the Maritimes. We Registered our Business, MariKenS Trading Post in 2002. The last two years we have been invited to represent Nova Scotia at various expos and tradeshows that showcase aboriginal art. Most recently we exhibited at the EastCoast Music Awards held in Sydney NS.

Soon Kenny's reputation as a Drum Maker led folks to suggest we build an online business. Then galleries and certain buyers asked Maria to paint their drums.  And that is the story of how 2 people dancing along the RedRoad pow wow trail became..........RedRoad Drums!

We love what we do. We meet wonderful people along our journeys, we learn from so many especially the elders and children with their own distinct insights!  In spite of its many challenges, Our business has brought us many gifts and blessings as We have travelled across the United States and Eastern Canada to unbelievably beautiful places. Maria has taken quite fondly to NewFoundland which is breathtaking in its pristine vastness and incredibly friendly people.

In 1995, We talked about starting our own business. Then we began to visualize it as reality. Today, we have reached that goal. Taking our business to the web makes the process even more exciting.
